چکیده

“Inductively Coupled Deep Brain Stimulator” describes a chip/system design to inductively couple arbitrary waveforms to electrodes embedded in the brain for deep brain stimulation or other neurostimulation. This approach moves the conventionally implanted signal generator outside the body and provides flexibility in adjusting waveforms to investigate optimum stimulation waveforms. An “inlaid electroplating” process with through-wafer plating is used to reduce microcoil resistance and integrate microstructures and electronics. Utilizing inductive link resonance specific to microcoils, waveforms are selectively transmitted to microcoils, which further produces biphasic waveforms that are suitable for deep brain stimulation.

Inductive pulse transmission by amplitude modulation using thin-film and electroplated microcoils

Jie Wu Shailendra Dubhashi Gary H. Bernstein University of Notre Dame Department of Electrical Engineering Notre Dame, Indiana 46556 Abstract. Inductive links are widely used for implanted biomedical applications, and with amplitude modulation their use can be expanded to the transmission of pulse trains for deep brain stimulation (DBS). Using a passive envelope detector and an integrated coil,...

O10: Deep Brain Stimulation and Psychiatry

The use of deep brain stimulation in psychiatric disorders has received great interest owing to the small risk of the operation, the reversible nature of the technique, and the possibility of optimizing treatment postoperatively. Currently deep brain stimulation in psychiatry is investigated for obsessive-compulsive disorder, Gilles de la Tourette’s syndrome and major depression. This presentat...

Control of epileptic seizures by electrical low frequency deep brain stimulation: A review of probable mechanisms

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease with no definitive method in treatment. Notably, the main way to treat and control epileptic seizures is drug therapy. However, about 20-30% of patients with epilepsy are drug resistant and require other therapeutic manners. Deep brain stimulation is a new therapeutic strategy for these patients. Conspicuously, there are no clear answers for basi...

Passive, wireless transduction of electrochemical impedance across thin-film microfabricated coils using reflected impedance.

A new method of wirelessly transducing electrochemical impedance without integrated circuits or discrete electrical components was developed and characterized. The resonant frequency and impedance magnitude at resonance of a planar inductive coil is affected by the load on a secondary coil terminating in sensing electrodes exposed to solution (reflected impedance), allowing the transduction of ...

BAWA, GAURAV. A Switched Capacitor based Micro-stimulator for Deep Brain Stimulation. (Under the direction of Dr. Maysam Ghovanloo and Dr. Leda Lunardi.) This thesis presents a novel technique for the development of an implantable stimulator for Deep Brain Stimulation. The key idea is to harvest energy from an inductive link using an efficient switching mechanism at the secondary side. To valid...
